History Of

The General Baptist Men In Missions

Introduction:  During 1953, The G/B Home Mission Board appointed a Brotherhood Committee to help organize the work of the General Baptist men.  This Committee was under the direct supervision of the Home Mission Board.  The first meeting of the G/B Brotherhood was held in Wayne City, Illinois in October of 1956.

In 1957, the General Association of General Baptists granted this Brotherhood Commission the status and name of "General Baptist Brotherhood Board" with representation on the General Board.  There were no dues or financial aid obligated to the Brotherhood Board from the General Board.

As a result of this action, the Brotherhood stood as an independent auxiliary of the Denomination, with its organization and operation vested in the Board of the Brotherhood, and the annual Convention, in accordance with the Constitution and Bylaws of the Board and subsequent amendments.

In 1999, the Directors of National and International Missions took on the oversight of the Brotherhood work, renaming it "Men In Action."  A full-time director was hired and an office established in the General Baptist Headquarters.

In 2001, the office at Headquarters was closed, the ministry was returned to the direction of the Men In Action Board of Directors, and a part-time director was hired.  The organization was re-named "Men In Missions" to more correctly reflect the goals and mission of the men.  The Board is endeavoring to become more involved in missions - national and international - to more adequately reveal the basic purpose of the ministry.
